SSEN Transmission’s consultation events are taking place from tomorrow in our area, giving residents the opportunity to help shape a new community benefit fund worth an expected £1.23 million for communities around the Melgarve Cluster project.

The fund will cover the Stratherrick & Foyers and Laggan Community Council areas, and your views matter! This is an important opportunity to influence how the funding is used and what it could deliver for our local communities in the years ahead.

Drop-in events taking place this week:

Tuesday 27 October – The Hub, 3.30pm–7pm

Wednesday 28 October – The Wildside Centre, 3.30pm–7pm

After careful consideration, Stratherrick and Foyers Community Trust has made the difficult decision not to organise a community fireworks display this year.

We know this will be disappointing for many residents and families who enjoy coming together for this annual event. However, over a number of years we have also received feedback from community members who do not support the display, and we felt it was important to take all views into account when considering whether to proceed.

To help guide our decision, we looked at the results of the community survey carried out by the Community Council earlier this year. One of the questions asked was:

"Would you like to see an organised firework display funded by Stratherrick and Foyers Community Trust again this year?"

Of the 101 responses received (99 online and 2 paper), 55 people answered Yes and 46 answered No. While there was a slight majority in favour, the result was close enough that we did not feel it provided a clear mandate to continue with the event on behalf of the wider community.

We appreciate that people will have differing views on this decision and the topic of fireworks, and we understand that many will be disappointed. With such a divided response, we felt it was appropriate to take a pause this year and review future options.

Instead, SFCT will be providing free transport to Inverness for local residents wishing to attend the city's bonfire and fireworks display. We hope this will still give members of our community the opportunity to enjoy a fireworks event, while bringing people together in a different way.

There’s just one week to go until two events at The Wildside Centre, Whitebridge, on Thursday 29th October!

FIRA AGM – 7pm
FIRA (Friends of Inverness Royal Academy) is the local youth group supporting young people from P7 to S6. The AGM is an important opportunity to help secure the group’s future, and parents and carers are encouraged to come along and consider volunteering their time to keep these opportunities available for local young people.

FIRA Youth Club Halloween Party – 6.30pm for 7pm
Open to all young people from P7 to S6, regardless of which school they attend. Dressing up is optional, and it’s FREE to attend!

You may have noticed that the community noticeboard in Lower Foyers has temporarily disappeared.

We’re carrying out some maintenance on noticeboards throughout the area, and this one has been taken out of service for a little freshen-up.

In the meantime, you can find community information on the other noticeboards located in Inverfarigaig, Gorthleck, Errogie, Torness and Whitebridge.

We look forward to having the Lower Foyers noticeboard back in place soon.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along last Thursday to take a look at our brand new Community Gym facilities at The Wildside Centre!

It was fantastic to see so many of you, and we’ve already received lots of great feedback and interest. We handed out 80 application forms, and we’re delighted that 36 people have already fully registered as gym members! ??

We wanted to give our community a little advance notice about some changes we have recently become aware of on Facebook (Meta), which may affect how we share information through the Stratherrick & Foyers Community Trust Facebook Page.

Meta has introduced new limits around the number of external webpage links that some Facebook Pages can share within a month. Under the current limits we are seeing, this could mean that we are restricted to just 2 external links per month.

For a community organisation like ours, this could have a significant impact on how we communicate with our followers.

For example, when we share a news update, event information or community announcement, we will often include a link to the SFCT website or another relevant webpage so that people can find the full information. Having to work within such a small link allowance means we may need to carefully consider which updates we link to directly on Facebook.

Meta does offer subscription options which increase the number of links that can be shared. The option currently available to us starts at £33.99 per month, which would work out at over £400 per year for the additional allowance, which would allow us up-to 10 links per month - For comparison, we currently share 30+ links per month. This is a significant cost for a community organisation and something we need to consider carefully.

Over the coming weeks, we will be experimenting with different ways of sharing our content and looking at the options available to us. This may mean changes to our usual social media calendar, including prioritising certain website links and finding other ways to direct people to information.

If you run your own business, organisation or community Facebook Page, we would recommend looking into this yourself, as these changes could also affect how you share content and links with your followers.

Please bear with us while we take some time to understand the changes and work out the best way forward. We will keep our community updated as we learn more.
